Web Pages |
This page explains how to upload/update your business web page that is hosted on the ICI web server.
NOTE: If you plan on using Microsoft FrontPage 98/2000 Extensions, please Contact Us personally for more detailed information!
If you're not planning on using Microsoft FrontPage 98's Server-Side Extensions, the first thing you will need is an FTP program. Dozens of these programs are available for free download on the Internet. The most popular two FTP programs are WS-FTP and CuteFTP. We recommend these highly, and we encourage you to try both of them out and see which one you like better. You can download these from the Surf-ICI Download Page. These is also a text-driven FTP client included with Windows 95, 98, and NT. It is located in the Windows directory, and is named ftp.exe.
Next, you will of course might need some kind of HTML authoring or editing program such as Microsoft FrontPage. This is the program you will use to create and modify your web site. You can also write HTML manually in a program such as Windows Notepad or Wordpad without the assistance of editors. This is more comfortable to some experienced people, but we think it is faster and easier to use a WYSIWYG editor like FrontPage 98.
Next, you will need to be sure we at ICI have properly set up your page for user access and that it is accessible to the public. For us this means setting up a username and password and a unique directory on our web server for you. If you also want your own domain name, there are more steps involved, but we still have to set things up the same way. For your username and password we will usually just use your same dial-in username and password, if you have one. Or, you can have a separate password.
Once you have created your web pages, installed your FTP software, and we have set up your web account, you can start your own process. Go into your FTP program and make a new profile or session so you can quickly connect to your web directory whenever you'd like. Here are the parameters:
Server/Host: www.surf-ici.com
Username: your username
Password: your password (case sensitive)
Remote Directory: c:\website\htdocs\your directory\htdocs (virtual domains only)
Once you are connected, you should have a directory listing in front of you. Usually on the left side of your screen is the local file listing, and on the right side of your screen is the remote file listing (our server). To upload your files, all you have to do is double-click on them or drag-and-drop. Since we have a Windows NT server, it is not necessary to set any permissions on your files as you would on a Unix server. That's all you have to do...
Virtual Domains
Web clients who have registered their own domain name through ICI can have their web page show up at www.yourcompany.com. All you have to do first is to log into your own htdocs directory on our server and send your pages. In this case, you would set your FTP client to start at c:\website\htdocs\your directory\htdocs. The second htdocs is where the virtual domain comes into play, and if you don't put your files in there, your domain name as a web page is useless.
