Web Site Promotion Tips

What better way is there to promote your business than to put it on the World Wide Web.  But if you don't know the rules of the game, your presence on the Web is just an exercise in futility.  Following a few simple tips can make your site popular in weeks or even days.  There is always someone on the Internet who is searching for something.  Your site could be the one that brings in your next customer.  It could be the one that makes your company a huge success.   But if no one finds your site, you might as well not have a site.

Meta Tags

One of the things that are most neglected are "META" tags.  META tags are HTML codes that search engines use when they index your web page.  These are used to efficiently place descriptions and keywords for your site into search engine databases.

Usually, search engines just spider your page, and if you have no META tags, they will take the text from your page and index it on their servers, and when people perform a search, they will be overwhelmed with a bunch of nonsense.   One way you can attract more visitors to your site properly is to simply go by a few easy rules.

In the <HEAD> portion of your HTML documents, place the following syntax of these META tags:

Here is an example, as taken from the Surf-ICI home page:

As you can see, this description just about sums up the purpose of Surf-ICI's web page.

These keywords are all words that a potential customer might type in on a search engine.  If someone were to enter ISDN dial-up access Indianapolis in a search engine like AltaVista, chances are they might have a much higher chance of getting Surf-ICI in the search results than, say, a provider that does not use these META tags.

Printed Media

Once you've got a web page, put your site's URL on all of your mailings and envelopes!  Business cards also help your site's popularity a lot.   Also, the newspaper and the yellow pages are also an excellent way to get your site's address noticed!

Search Engine Registration

The easiest way to make your site popular is to submit it to search engines.  This is usually the only way that customers can find out about your web site.  If you use META tags (see above), your luck is even greater.  If your web site sells tractors, and your META tags indicate tractor keywords and a nice brief description, and then you submit your URL, your chances of success are excellent.

Another great thing about search engines nowadays is that most of them have a feature where you can submit your page's URL.  We have created a simple collection of search engine registration forms.  For most of these, all you have to do is enter your site's URL (http://www.yourcompany.com/) and your e-mail address for some of them.  The spider will visit your site about a week or two later and then it will index it.  If you have META tags, your listing will show up nicely in search results, if you don't use META tags, your listing might look like a bunch of nonsense phrases.
