General

Q:  How do I set Windows to automatically disconnect after 'x' minutes?
A:  Go to Control Panel, then Internet.  Under the Connection tab you should find an option to change the settings for your modem.  These will let you set the auto-disconnect timer.

Q:  Windows reports my modem connecting at 57,600 (or faster), but my modem isn't even that fast!
A:  The problem is that Windows is actually reporting the speed that your computer communicates with your modem, not the actual connection speed to our dial-up.  To fix, you need to give information to your modem.  Do this by going to Control Panel, then go to Modems.  Click your modem, then click Properties.  Go to the Connection tab, then click Advanced.  Under Extra Settings, enter ATW2.   The W2 tells the modem to show the actual speed, and most modems support this command.  Re-start your computer, and Windows should then properly display your actual connection speed.

Problems

Here is a list of Win95/98 Dial-Up Networking Error Codes and Explanations.

Q:  Err-Msg:  Dial-Up Networking is unable to establish...
A:  Check your network settings in Control Panel and Dial-Up Networking to see that all the settings are correctly entered.

Q:  Err-Msg:  There is no dialtone...
A:  If you have Voice Mail, make sure you delete all your messages to eliminate the stuttered dialtone which will cause your modem to think there is no dialtone.  Also, if you have communications or fax software loaded, close it before you try to use the Internet.

Q:  Err-Msg:  The computer is not receiving a response from the modem...
A:  Make sure your modem is properly installed in your computer, and that the drivers are properly installed, and that it is connected to your phone line correctly.  If you are not sure, un-install your modem, and re-install it.  Please refer to your modem manufacturer's page.  Some modem manufacturers are USRobotics, Diamond, and Zoom.

Q:  Err-Msg:  Unable to establish a connection...
A:  Make sure TCP/IP, Dial-Up Adapter, and Client for Microsoft Networks are installed.  Then, make sure you have the DNS servers configured.

Q:  I am unable to use the Save Password option!
A:  Make sure that Client for Microsoft Networks or Microsoft Family Logon (Win98) is installed under Control Panel's Network configuration.  These will allow you to save your dial-up password.
