Windows 95/98 |
How to read this document
Words in Italic indicate menu options. Words in Boldface are icons or buttons to click or double-click on. Words Underlined are options, components or information you are supposed to look for. "Words in Quotes" means you are to type whatever you see within the quotation marks...NEVER type quotation marks when you are setting up Windows. Arrows > indicate cascading menu options. For example, "Start > Settings" means to click your Start button, then click Settings.
First, make sure you have your Windows 95/Windows 98 CD-ROM or diskettes handy.
Control Panel
Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel. Go into Network. Make sure Client for Microsoft Networks (In Windows 98, it is called Microsoft Family Logon), Dial-Up Adapter, and TCP/IP is installed.
Close the Network Configuration window to go back to Control Panel. Go into Add/Remove Programs. Go to the Windows Setup tab. Look under the Communications category to see if Dial-Up Networking (DUN) is checked. If it is not, place a checkmark next to Dial-Up Networking (nothing else needs to be checked) and click OK as much as needed to return and copy the DUN files to your computer. Chances are, DUN is already installed by default.
Dial-Up Networking (DUN)
Go to My Computer, then go into Dial-Up Networking. If you do not see Dial-Up Networking, click the View > List, to make things easier to find. If you still cannot find it, re-read the above instructions to make sure it is installed.
Next, you will probably want to get rid of any existing connections or ISPs. If you use any other Internet services such as MSN, and are sure you don't need them, you may click on each connection individually, then delete it by clicking File > Delete.
After you have deleted any existing connections, double-click the Make New Connection icon. This is a simple 3-step process which will set up a basic connection. If you are greeted with a Welcome to Dial-Up Networking screen, just click Next. Now you will be asked for the Connection Name. Just type "Surf-ICI" and click Next. You will then be asked for a Telephone number. DO NOT enter anything for the area code. For the telephone number, put an initial "*70" IF and ONLY IF you have call waiting on your line. Then enter one of our telephone numbers. If you are unsure, call us and we will tell you the number you should be dialing. After you have entered the telephone number, click Next. You will then get a confirmation screen, just click Finish.
Now you need to configure the basic settings for the connection. Click once on the new Surf-ICI icon to highlight it under the DUN window, then go to File > Properties. Go to Server Type. The only ones to have checked in this window are Enable Software Compression and TCP/IP, and nothing else! Now click the TCP/IP Settings button. Under the TCP/IP Settings window, click in the circle next to Specify Name Server Addresses. For Primary DNS, enter "209.100.145.17". For Secondary DNS, enter "209.100.145.16". Click OK. Then click OK once again to return to the DUN window.
Finally, click File > Create Shortcut. You will see a message like "Windows cannot create a shortcut here, do you want it on the desktop instead?" Just click Yes. Then you can close the DUN and My Computer windows and you should see a new icon labeled Shortcut to Surf-ICI.
The Shortcut to Surf-ICI is the icon you use to connect each time. You will have to enter your Username & Password (Remember, the password is CaSe SeNsItIvE!) each time you want to connect, and when you're ready to dial you can just click the Connect button. Once you're connected, go to you Internet applications such as Netscape or Internet Explorer, or your e-mail software.
Congratulations! That's it, and you should be ready to use Windows/Dial-Up Networking to connect to ICI.
