Summer Party  (by Cindie Travis)

Summer is here finally.  Its time to get out the bikes get some exercise and eat good food. This year the Prescott Chain Gang has decided to have their summer party at Granite Basin Recreation Area on Saturday, June 16, 2001. Mountain bike rides leaving from the Wekuvde Day Use Area (near the site host and just before the road splits to form the loop past the lake) at 8:00am. Mt bikers will have a choice of scenic beginner, intermediate or advanced loops and single track.  No road rides are planned, however if you want to lead a ride let me know so I can post it.  Otherwise, join us at the party at 11:30 am. Food and soft drinks will be provided by the Prescott Chain Gang. This party is open to members, friends and first timers alike. Anyone interested in cycling should come. There is no charge other than the $2.00 parking fee to the Forest Service. Please let me know if you are coming so I can get an idea of how much food to bring.   Cindie Travis, 520-541-7604 or e-mail cindieno smamPrescottYellowPages.com

Bike Rodeo

PRESCOTT POLICE DEPARTMENT 2nd ANNUAL BICYCLE RODEO

This event will be held on Saturday June 2, 2001 at Ken Lindley's North  parking lot from 9:30 am. to 11:30 am. Children ages 6 to 14 are invited  to come and participate. There will be bicycle helmets for those that are  in need. Local businesses have donated for this event and there will be free food and drinks for all participants and volunteers.  The local Bike Shops will be on hand with displays and also helping with  minor bicycle adjustments and equipment fittings.  This will be a fun event for all children and we feel it will be a good  safety reminder for them as they go into their summer vacation. So bring  them kids and we'll see you there.  If anyone would like to help out or you have any questions please contact   the Community Services Division at the Police Department 778-1444.

Thank you Paul Clemens

Prescott Criterium  (by Tim Travis)

Prescott will be having a Criterium on Saturday, June 30, 2001.  The race will take place after the parade from 1:00 pm to 8:30 pm.  A Criterium is a short (4/10 mile) circuit  made out of a couple city blocks (in our case) that the racers make several laps on.  For more information on the course and prize amounts see  http://www.bicycleranch.com. To my knowledge this is the first Criterium to take place in our town.

The advantage for spectators is that they see one race at a time so you know who is doing well and spectators will be able to see the action every few minutes.  These races tend to be very short with lots of action and an exciting final sprint.

This is a wonderful event to participate in or just watch. It is an incredible asset to our city and the local recreational and racer riders in this area.  So, come out and support our local talent.

If you go to watch only one race this year this should be it.

Hi, I'm 65 years old and about as out of shape as one can get. I want to get into better shape and just bought a MT Bike from Mountain Sports. Are there any clubs or sections within your club that has older beginners to ride with? I'm new to Prescott and so far have only been on the Peavine trail. I have no problems on that trail but would like to try others that I could handle also if I knew how to find them. I do have trail maps from bike shops. I plan on not being a beginner for very long but at my age I will always have some limits as most seniors have. I live close to Thumb Butte on Gail Gardner Way. How far out of my league are the regular Thur. Eve. bikers that go there?

Thanks for any help you may offer,

Insight Race Across America by John Hughes

The 20th running of the Race Across America, the toughest endurance event in the world, will start in Portland, OR. On Saturday, June 16, Peter Lekisch and Jim Pitre will start in the age 60 and over division, each trying to be the first 60 year old to finish the race.

On Sunday, June 17 fifteen solo men and women, and a two-woman relay team will start. The men's solo field includes six veterans and seven rookies. Rob Kish, in his 16th RAAM, is trying for his fourth win. Cassie Lowe, who won the 2000 women's race, will be competing against Katie Lindquist, who raced tandem in RAAM 2000.

Six two-man relay teams will start on Tuesday, June 19. The two-person race should be hot. Nine of the two-man racers are RAAM veterans. Ricardo Arap, one-half of the two-man team that set the transcontinental record in 1998, is racing with Luiz Milano. The two-person format was a big success last year. Dwight Bishop said, "Doing RAAM as a two person team is the most fun I have had in a long time." Also starting on the 19th are a four-man team and four-woman team.

RAAM 2001 will travel 3,000 miles and climb 100,000 feet. The race starts off as a giant roller coaster with 70% of the climbing in the first half of the race: Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming and Colorado. The longest climb is from Ogden, UT 36 miles to the top of the Monte Cristo Mountains at 9,000 ft. Leaving Manila, UT riders face a series of brutal climbs through the Flaming Gorge Scenic Area. Then in Colorado, racers climb 17 miles to Tennessee Pass (10,424 ft.) The remainder of the RAAM route goes through rolling country in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. The race finishes in Gulf Breeze, FL. Most riders are expected to finish between Monday, June 25 and Thursday, June 28.

The course is virtually the same as the 2000 route, which was widely praised by riders and crew. "The course was great. Most of the roads were smooth with very little traffic. There was more climbing than this Florida flatlander could have imagined and almost as much scenic beauty," said Kish.

RAAM is an all out test of "first one there wins." Each rider's crew will bring together the corners of the country and tie them together in a hobo's bundle ready for traveling. The most extreme athletes in the world will be tested against the obstacles of a continent. You race hard or you stay home. RAAM will find a rider's weakness and pick at it all the way across the country. The strongest make it to the finish line. Everyone else is left scattered emotionally and physically across the country. RAAM is for the best riders who save nothing for beyond the finish line.
