| Ride Changes (by Tim
Travis) |
October in Arizona always brings about a change in the weather, the amount of daylight,
and the end of the long road-racing season. The shorter days end the Tuesday - Thursday
training rides and the cooler temperatures change the starting time of the remaining rides
to later in the morning. The end of the road-racing season changes some people's attitudes
towards training. The MT bikers have a new ride just for the month of October. (See
below for more information) So, here are the changes that take place for our club:
The Monday morning recreational ride will be meeting at 9:00 AM for the months of
October and November. In December the ride will move to 10:00 AM for the winter.
The 5:30 PM Tuesday / Thursday training rides are ending for this season. There is
simply not enough daylight to continue into winter but we will be at it again next spring
starting in March. Both the Tuesday road ride and Thursday MT bike ride were very
successful and improved everyone's fitness levels tremendously. I would like to thank all
those that came out and made this happen.
The Saturday morning recreational road ride will be meeting at 9:00 AM for the months
of October and November. In December the ride will move to 10:00 AM for the winter.
Saturday morning mountain bike ride in the pines. Month of October. Options will vary
from one to three hours and from intermediate to advanced. Meet at the old gravel pit
that's up Senator Hwy. on the right -- about 2.5 miles up Mt. Vernon from Gurley. Ride
starts at 8 a.m. Call Steve or Marcee before 9 p.m. (Early a.m. also okay) at 778-5945 or
days at 776-2391.
The Sunday morning courthouse road training ride time is changing. Starting this Sunday
the ride will start at 8:00 AM and continue at this time for the months of October and
November. In December the ride will move to 9:00 AM for the winter. Because the
road-racing season is over I would expect that these rides will be possibly longer and
probably slower compared to the summer. Of course, this is a leaderless ride and the
group, before and during the ride, decides routs and pace.

| PBAC Letter (by Marcee Keller) |
This letter was sent by the Prescott Bicycle Advisory Committee (PBAC) to select,
local non-profit organizations in Prescott.
Dear Citizen of Prescott:
We believe we share in your organization's goals for a healthy, clean,"green"
Prescott. Allow us to introduce the Prescott Bicycle Advisory Committee
("P-BAC") -- its members, its goals, and its accomplishments. PBAC works with
city staff, transportation officials and the community to develop on-road bicycleways as a
serious mode of transportation to help minimize congestion and noise, keep our air clean
and reduce motor vehicle miles traveled per capita. For travel continuity, we coordinate
our on-road designations with Sue Knapp, Executive Director of Prescott Alternative
Transportation (PAT), who continues her efforts and accomplishments in developing off-road
paths, trails and bicycle access for Prescott.
Our first big accomplishment since new leadership in December, 1999 was winning city
council approval for Prescott's first bike lanes -- those on Watson Woods Bridge (the
69/89 connector road). And it was PBAC leaders -- Cindie Travis, Marcee Keller, Derek
Brownlee and Steve Becker -- who recently worked with ADOT officials, and city engineers
and staff prior to the city council meeting to assure bike lanes remained on the bridge
while accommodating ADOT's lane-widening request.
In June 2000, PBAC convinced city council that Prescott needed a Phase II Bike Plan and
policy to assure that bike lanes and routes routinely become a standard component of city
roadway design and construction throughout Prescott. In addition, PBAC requested that city
staff (Planner Tiffany Rich and Steve Gaber) write the plan (which includes pedestrian
rights-of-way, too) with PBAC and community members' input to assure ownership and
implementation by all.
PBAC is also conducting a "Ridership Survey" (written and managed by Chris
Frederiksen and Kara Baker with help from City Communicator J.J. McCormick and City
Planner Tiffany Rich). It was printed in the "City Pages" and sent out with city
water bills last month. The survey asks safety and usage questions of motorists and
cyclists. The number of survey responses has far exceeded all other surveys conducted by
the city. And we are just beginning to get responses back from local college students.
Last month, PBAC organized and hosted Arizona's first Bicycle Advocacy Summit. The
Summit featured established and respected leaders from Tucson and Phoenix. A total of 58
bicycle advocates from throughout Arizona attended both days of this informative,
networking event. Donations from the City of Prescott, Coalition of Arizona Bicyclists and
the Chain Gang Bicycling Club contributed to the event's success.
Like many of you, we share the same frustrations and energy drain of working full-time,
pursuing degrees, raising families, and enjoying the outdoors while also growing our
commitment to something we believe in and are passionate about. And like you, we somehow
keep going. It really helps knowing there are others, like you, working for a healthy,
clean, green Prescott.
Thank you for YOUR efforts! Please feel free to call us if you need our help on an
important issue or to join us on the City's Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation Planning
Committee (The third Wednesday of each month, 5:30 p.m., downstairs of City Hall,
wheelchair entrance).
Most sincerely,
Cindie Travis, Chair 771-0610 (work) or 541-7604 (home) Marcee Keller, Secretary

| Hazard Survey Volunteers Needed |
Here is our chance to tell the City of Prescott what roads in town need improving in
terms of bicycle use. The results of this survey will be put in the updated Bike
Plan and will help identify the areas we can request get improved.
We will have a form ready for you to fill out that lists various on-road bicycle
hazards throughout Prescott like wrong-way grates, wide cracks in the road, etc. You
pick the area of town you are interested in surveying.
We will meet on October 21, 2000 at 9:00 am at the south side of the Court House. We'll
break up into small groups, each covering a different part of town. Then all meet later
for lunch. If you can't make this group effort you can pick up a form from the City of
Prescott and do your own survey at a time convenient for you. Call Tiffany Rich at
the City of Prescott for details and to select the part of town you want to cover.
Arizona Bicycle Advocacy Summit
(by Cindie Travis) |
The first Arizona Bicycle Advocacy Summit held August 26, and 27, 2000 at the Prescott
Library was a huge success. The speakers were: Richard Metz from the
Coalition of Arizona Bicyclists, Cindie Travis from the Prescott Bicycle Advisory
Committee, Matt Zoll from the Tucson-Pima County Bicycle Advisory Committee, Richard Moeur
from the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), Reed Kempton, Bicycle Coordinator
with Maricopa Association of Governments, and Penny Taylor a lobbyist with Southwest Gas
and a Bicycle Advocate. It was great being in the same room with everyone that had
the same goal of increasing bicycle safety and access. We had some special guests
from Tucson, the Gormans. The Gormans along with help from Penny Taylor were
instrumental in getting the 3 foot law passed. To those who may not know it, the 3
foot law requires motorists to give a cyclist 3 feet when they pass. The Gormans
began their crusade after their son Brad was struck and killed on a road in Tucson.
Their goal is to educate and promote bicycle safety and awareness. Thanks Jim and
Jean.
Here are some of the things I learned from each of the speakers: Richard Metz
made it clear that we had fellow advocates in Phoenix that are willing to help us with our
issues such as the Airport Connector. Matt Zoll reminded me that I should have some
fun, don't let them snow you, and my favorite "Take a politician to lunch.
Richard Mouer enlighten everyone on how our highway engineers think and how ADOT is
structured. Reed Kempton, has a job I would like to have, dazzled us with numbers
and statistics useful for our bike plan. Penny Taylor educated me on the legislative
process and how important it is to network, network, and network some more.
For those of you that missed it, we do have a video tape available to anyone who is
interested. Please contact Tim Travis at timno smamprescottyellowpages.com
The Summit was so successful that another one has been scheduled for June 2001 in
Flagstaff. Thanks Jack Welch of the Coconino Cycling Club for volunteering your
efforts and you can count on my support.

Hi,
My boyfriend and I are considering a move from Santa Cruz, CA to Prescott and I was
just wondering if you could clue us in on any running/track clubs and triathlon clubs in
the area.
Your site is great. It makes me want to move to Prescott just for the rides!

Hello,
My husband, Mike, and I are in the long process of relocating from RI to AZ. We bought
land in Clarksdale several years ago, and plan to be in the area shortly to meet with our
builder and other things of that nature.
One of the things we dearly love about the area we live in now (though we are sure we
will love AZ FAR BETTER!!!) is the great bike trails available for both road and hybrid
bikes. I've seen a lot of information available about mountain biking in AZ, but nothing
about "our kind of biking" in the Clarksdale, Cottonwood area. Can you help me
with this?
We'll be visiting AZ the week of 10/7/00 and among a long list of many things I'd like
to do is check-out some great biking areas. Any suggestions?
I look forward to your response, and thank you for your time!

Hi, could you add a link to http://www.totalcycling.com
on your links page. We're a new company based in Ireland but use Fed Ex to deliver to the
US and have cheaper prices than US companies for European cycling goods. We can offer bulk
buy deals to cycling clubs for consumable items like tires/ pedals/ h/bar tape and
saddles. We also sponsor www.cyclingforum.com Thanks, Mike

Watson Woods Bridge Bike Lane Update
(by Cindie Travis) |
On September 12, 2000, the Arizona Department of Transportation, Bob LaJeunesse and Tom
Foster, met with the Prescott City Council to discuss the issue of not enough turning
radius for trucks on the Watson Woods Bridge. Originally the two options were:
remove the bike lanes off the bridge or reduce the number of thru lanes on the bridge.
Members of the Prescott Bicycle Advisory Committee and City of Prescott staff, met
with ADOT prior to the City Council meeting. In that meeting, it was worked out that
bike lanes on the Watson Woods Bridge could remain if the intersection before the bridge
was widen to accommodate turning trucks and that the bike lanes would be removed from the
intersection. By the time we went to City Council it was a done deal, we had our
bike lanes. I would like to thank all the people present at that meeting for their
efforts. Thank you Marcee Keller, Steve Becker, Derek Brownlee, JJ McCormick, and
Tiffany Rich.
| Letter to PBAC (by Tim Travis) |
Dear PBAC Members: I recently found out that I have until the end of the year to finish
my Masters degree. NAU gives you 6 years to complete your degree and I started exactly 6
years ago. I only have 2 classes left and I am taking both of them this semester. The good
news is that I will graduate this December. The bad news is that I did not have much
flexibility in picking class times and one of my classes meets every Wednesday evening.
As you all know both of the PBAC meetings and the Bike Plan meetings meet on Wednesday
evenings and therefore I will not be attending either of these meetings for the rest of
this year.
According to the PBAC rules concerning citizen membership you have to attend 3 out of 6
meetings in order to maintain (voting) membership in the committee. I even was the one who
suggested this rule and PBAC voted to adapt it. I still think it is a fair rule and intend
to obey it. So, before I mysteriously miss 3 meetings I thought it best to give everyone
advanced notice so you know what is going on.
I would like to tie up all the projects that I have started. I do not like leaving
things half finished. Fortunately we were just beginning the Bike Plan process and I have
not started too many things. Below I have listed the projects that I think fit in this
category and I intend to finish.
--8 hour AZ summit tape dubbing and coping
--Picking up the Prescott Bike Surveys in the locations I am responsible for.
I also volunteered for several projects but have not actually started them. Because I
will not be at the meetings I will not be able to actually start or complete these
projects. I hope that others will pick up these projects and get involved in this
important work. Below I have listed the project that I think fit in this category.
--Hazard Survey
--Facilities Ride
--Bike Plan Policy Sub Committee
I regret any inconvenience that this may cause.
