Bicycle Advisory Committee (Update on City Council meetings and
July meeting agenda) |
This is the first month of the permanent ride schedule. The permanent ride
schedule is different from the previous monthly ride schedule in that it does not change
from month to month. This new ride schedule will only change when there is a ride
change; which should be infrequent. So far this has been well received by people on
the club rides and is a tremendous relief in terms work involved. No longer is it
necessary on a monthly bases find ride leaders, print ride schedules, and distribute them
to the bike shops. My next hope is the bike shops get online and print them as
needed.
I have made a one page printable version of the ride schedule that is available at http://surf-ici.com/chaingang/print-schedule.htm
I hope this makes it easier to hang on the fridge or at the bike shops.
Bike 2000 has now been at their new location (see map at URL below) for
several months. The program seems to be doing well now that they are more visible.
I have made them a one page web site that can be printed as a flyer. If you
know of a bulletin board please print and post it. Also, if you have not been to
Bike 2000 then you are really missing out. There are several antique bikes and all
kinds of bike stuff to look at. They love visitors!
BIKE 2000 repairs donated bicycles and gives to those in need; the
homeless, At Risk Youth, and others. Recipients must give service hours in our program or
in other community areas.

The 87th Tour de France, the toughest and most romantic race in the
world, kicks off from the retro-future theme park at Futuroscope on Saturday July 1 with a
testing individual time trial. The race traverses 3,630km in 21 stages over 23 days
through some of the most beautiful geography in the world. The 2000 race also features a
tactically demanding team time trial for the first time in five years. With five
unforgiving days in the Alps and three brutal summit finishes it promises to be one of the
most demanding races in years. A second individual time trial just two days from the
finish in Paris will guarantee suspense right up to the final weekend. And with the last
three winners of the prestigious yellow jersey(Lance Armstrong Marco Pantani and Jan
Ullrich) all taking their places on the starting ramp, it's all thrillingly poised for a
battle royale.

Is it possible to get a list of members to in order have a catalog sent to. One of the
requirements for my sponsorship is to get as many catalogs out to cyclist as possible. If
you could email me a list of members in your cycling club I will see to it that they
receive a catalog. The sponsor company has some of the cheapest prices available to
bikers, from road to mtb equipment and is a leading national supplier. In turn this helps
me out by supporting my relationship with my sponsor so I can support my racing and riding
habits. Thank You, Jamie Tyler Captain Team Neuro

| Jamie:` I can understand the "bike habit" I have had it ever
since I was in grade school and it can get very expensive. So if you want to send me
a catalog you may do so but I am not at liberty to give out the email or postal address of
the members of our club. I will print your message in our newsletter and give club
members and friends the opportunity to email the addresses to you. GOOD LUCK!

Hi!
I am sending along information about our charity biking event to be held in August. I
am including a little information about the event and about the organization who will be
receiving the funds. I would appreciate it if you could list the event in your calendar of
events for your club. If you have any questions please contact me by return email or at
480.945.3302, Ext. 169. Thanks so much. Linda Hilliard, Director of Development, The New
Foundation, Scottsdale, AZ.
First - the event! On Saturday, August 12th we will be holding our second annual Crater
Quest - 2000. The ride takes place at Sunset Crater National Monument just minutes north
of Flagstaff. The ride is all inside the park on blacktop roads. It is a road bike,
non-competitive event with several stops in the ride for water, fruit and juice. You will
have your choice of a 30 or 60 mile loop. It is a great high altitude training ride held
under USCF Permit #2000-987. The ride stages at 6:00AM and rolls at 6:30AM. Participants
receive an Official Crater Quest Bike Ride T-shirt, continental breakfast, "Free
Raffle Ticket" and a Goodie Bag. Awards will be given in the 30 mile and 60 mile ride
to the top three male and female finishers. There will be a bar-b-que picnic after the
ride provided by APS and other sponsors. The ride is free if you collect $100 or more in
Pledges for The New Foundation. Otherwise, the fee is $30.00 day of race or $25.00 early
registration. Prizes will be awarded for most pledges gathered based on total dollar
value. A full brochure will be available soon - will send them along as soon as they are
ready.
The New Foundation works with teens and families in crisis. We address the needs of
these adolescents who are emotionally and/or behaviorally impaired though the use of
highly structured and supervised programs. The original mission of providing therapy in a
home like atmosphere has grown into a multi-service treatment and educational environment.
Our population is 11 through 17 years of age, both male and female. We have a 53 bed
residential facility just a few blocks from the Los Arcos redevelopment area in southeast
Scottsdale.
Throughout the past thirty years we have expanded our services, and today, offer a
comprehensive Level 1 Residential Treatment Program (unlocked psychiatric), Partial Care
Services, Out-Patient Services, Education Programs in a certified and accredited school,
Therapeutic Group Home Programs, an innovative Family Violence Diversion Program, the STOP
(Scottsdale Time Out Project) Program and a Chemical Dependency Program to help teens
remain sober. The New Foundation's unique "continuum of care" approach provides
youth and their families the ability to move through various levels of care without
changing locations, care givers or teachers.
Our facility and programs have been accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation
of Healthcare Organizations since 1994.
The New Foundation's Marion Burton School is fully accredited by the Commission on
Schools of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools for regular education and
approved by the Arizona Department of Education for ED/LD. We are not a charter school.
All of our teachers hold Arizona Certification for the academic areas they teach.
Individual education plans are prepared for each student who then receive transferable
credits for successfully completed course work. The school focuses on the "whole
student" academically, socially and emotionally. Students work at their individual
levels which permits them to experience success in their educational program. The school
provides the critical components necessary to enable students to return to, and
successfully participate in, a public school setting.
In order for our students to succeed in their education, we provide a much higher
student/teacher ratio, specialized training, bi-lingual teachers and aides, and a wide
array of individualized teaching materials.
Many of our students are educationally delayed due to the following: Developmentally
delayed due to lack of early identification of learning disability Poor English language
skills because their parents do not speak English Children of drug addicted parents
Children with fetal alcohol syndrome Inadequate resources in public schools to educate the
students with behavioral issues that interfere with their learning processes
In a rather large nutshell - that's our story. All proceeds from the ride will go to
support the programs and services of The New Foundation.
We would appreciate the support of all the folks in your group who love to ride, either
for fun or are more serious about their bike training. The course works for both purposes.
It's a great event for the whole family in the cool pines of northern Arizona.
Thanks again, Linda Xsathrano smamaol.com

Hello fellow cyclists,
Here is the latest news on the Bicycle Advocacy Front,
June 19, 2000 was City Fair day and PBAC had a booth. Marcee Keller, Derek Brownlee and
Steve Becker put a lot of work into the booth and it turned out great. Unfortunately
Mother Nature kept trying to blow the booth down. We handed out the Bicycle Ridership
Survey and got 47 responses. I think this is a great start. Look for the Bike Ridership
Survey in your water bill. I am giving a copy of the survey to Cindy Barks, a newspaper
reporter for the Courier. She is definitely a bicycle advocate so I expect to see some
good press soon.
June 20,2000 was the city council study session. Things went O.K but it was obvious
that not everyone knew what we were planning to do. Councilmen Tom Reilly thought that we
were trying to do the same thing that Sue Knaup was working on so he was against it from
the get go. Marcee and I knew that we had to lobby the council members if we were going to
get a yes vote on June 27, 2000.
June 22, 2000 Marcee, Derek and I attended the Central Yavapai Transportation and
Planning Organization meeting. WOW!!! We are getting a lot of new roads. Way to many to
discuss here. I will have a copy of the agenda for everyone at the next meeting. I think
that we need to stay in touch with this group; they are the movers and shakers of this
area. I came a way wondering if bicycle facilities are being considered on the new roads.
Sue Knaup updated everyone on T21 funding and the beginnings of a regional planning
committee.
June 23, 2000 I had many meetings at the city. The first meeting was with Tom Reilly,
Sue Knaup and Lee Nidess. We discussed the outline of the updated Bike Plan and agreed
that alternative transportation was out of the scope of the plan. I went over the outline
and it was agreeable to everyone. Tom Reilly didn't think that a consultant was necessary.
During our lobbying efforts it was suggested that we recommend using a consultant on an as
needed basis not to exceed $15,000.
June 27, 2000 we went to city council for the vote to use city staff or a consultant
for the updated bike plan. Going to city council is always an experience and this session
was the toughest yet. We went from having city staff and a consultant part-time to no bike
plan update at all. The council finally agreed to using city staff and allowing us to use
a consultant up to $15,000 with the stipulation that we present our request for a
consultant to the council for approval. I think things went well for us. I would like to
add that Lee Nidess really went to bat for us and gave me excellent guidance along the
way. Thanks Lee!!! I intend to show that portion of the council meeting at our next
meeting.
That's the news for now. Cindie Travis
