No More Saturday Rides :(

I am sad to announce that no one has stepped forward to be the ride coordinator and therefore the Prescott Chain Gang will no longer have regularly scheduled Saturday rides.  The club will still be having our weekly rides on Mon., Tues., Thurs., and Sun. so there is still plenty of riding.  These weekly rides do not require a ride coordinator because the leader and times are always set.  The Saturday rides required a ride coordinator to find ride leaders, which is nearly impossible lately, and type up the descriptions.  George Woods and I have been doing all of this work the past several months but we both agree that we have had enough.  If you want to keep the Saturday rides alive now is the time to step forward and become the ride coordinator.

There is the possibility that the club could come up with an every Sat. ride that would always meet in the same place (opposed to an original ride that meets in different locations) but  until someone steps forward to lead such a ride it will not happen.     Tim

Sunday Road Training Ride Time Change

The Sunday morning road training ride will change its starting time immediately to 7:00 am because of the heat.  This is different to what is printed in the Tail Wind Times.

The new ride description is as follows:

Every Sunday morning (Speed work) road ride.  The ride starts at Young's Farm at the intersection of Highway 69 and 169 in Dewey.  There are three options of milages to accommodate skill levels.  50 miles/ 72 miles/ 93 miles.  The scenery is classic Arizona Mountains.  For you Phoenix riders come up and get out of the summer heat.  The new shoulder on Highway 69 makes this route safe from traffic and great for group rotations.  Please note this is a serious ride with speedwork/ intervals/ and sprints designed into the course.  This is a training pace ride not a leisurely paced ride.

Summer hours: From April 1st to the end of September the ride starts 7:00 am
Winter hours: From October 1st to the end of March the ride starts 9:00 am

Any questions contact James Lazok at 520-455 0150.

Coconino Cycling Club Web Site

The Coconino Cycling Club (Flagstaff) has a new web site which looks very nice.  I hear that their club has been growing by leaps and bounds.  I wish them well and have already added them to our links section of our site.  I have not spoke to the organizers in a long time but I am sure they would be interested in combining some future activities or working together in some way.  Coconino Cycling Club    http://www.coconinocyclingclub.com/

Summer Party

Summer is here finally.  Its time to get out the bikes get some exercise and eat good food. This year the Prescott Chain Gang will have their summer party at Granite Basin Recreation Area. There will be a road ride and mountain bike rides leaving from the Wekuvde Day Use Area (near the site host and just before the road splits to form the loop past the lake) at 8:00am. Mt bikers will have a choice of scenic beginner, intermediate or advanced loops and single track. The road ride will be a climber's delight to Skull Valley and back. The party will start at 11:30 am and include food and soft drinks. This party is open to members, friends and first timers alike. Anyone interested in cycling should come. There is no charge other than the $2.00 parking fee to the Forest Service. Please call me so I can get an idea of how much food to bring.   Cindie Travis, 520-541-7604 or e-mail cindieno smamPrescottYellowPages.com

Prescott Bike Week Losing Ground

The Prescott Bike week, organized by Prescott Alternative Transportation (PAT),  has been losing popularity during the past three years that I have participated.  The first year that I went to their rides and events there were many people involved and growing excitement.   The second year had a few less and this year participation was almost non existent.   I can only think of one or two people who came to a ride because it was part of the Bike Week Schedule.   Our rides during that week had the usual turn out of club members and friends and almost no influx of new riders attracted by the Bike Week event.

I am not involved in the planning of bike week (even though I volunteered) so I can not explain why Bike Week had so much trouble.  However, I would like to add, this event seems more like a fund raiser than an event meant to pull the Prescott bike community together.

I wish this event would have taken off.  The Prescott bike community could use some pulling together.  This event could have gone a long way to encourage several bike groups working together.  Maybe someday the Parks Department or other neutral party will hold such an event in the future.  It has all the makings of something big and shouldn't be heading backwards.  Tim

Hi, I got your website out of Adventure Cycling's yellow pages. My girlfriend and I are riding coast to coast this summer but are detouring off the transam route to come down thru the 4 corners area, thru Flagstaff, and down into Prescott to visit some family. Any advice you have on what roads to take/avoid would be greatly appreciated or any advice on cycling in AZ in general. Email me back no smam Damon_Stewartno smamhotmail.com if you can help us. Maybe we can meet up at the Prescott brew pub when we get into town. We're looking to be in Prescott by early July. Eternal Tailwinds, Damon Stewart

Hello      This morning we packed Stephen Ives and the 'world's fastest production touring bike' off to San Francisco for the start of their epic 6,000 mile ride to Tokyo. It's hard to believe after all these months of planning that the Challenge is finally on the launch pad.

Steve begins riding at Berkeley North cycling along San Pablo Ave on Saturday 3 June. By day's end he should be in Antioch - hopefully an easy 50 miles to get into the swing of things. Then onwards to Stockton, Chinese Camp, Yosemite Village and Tuolummne Meadows before heading for Benton, Nevada.

Look out for regular email bulletins and of course Steve's log on the Challenge web site (www.teamstudio.org). Along the way he will be meeting town mayors to present a Challenge pennant flag and of course giving media interviews. Don't know how he'll find the time to cycle! An English joke of course (well almost). No kidding, he's in great shape and raring to go - keep your eyes open or you'll miss him.

The good news is we have already met our fund-raising target with just over $106,000. Naturally we want even more so everything from here on is a bonus. Many thanks to all Challenge supporters, we couldn't do it without you.

Let me know if you have specific questions or would like further information. I'll keep in touch. Chris

Last weekend I visited Prescott for a weekend of mountain biking. We had gone up Gurley St. > Thumb Butte Rd. > Rd. 373 > Trail 264. While sitting there at the intersection of 373 and tr. 264, we saw three or four riders on long-travel FS bikes heading onward up the road. I didn't want to interrupt their climb to ask, but is there a singletrack or jeep road descent coming down from near the Sierra Prieta overlook? My Cosmic Ray trail guide doesn't show one. I like riding the Prescott area but I only know of two trails, and would love to find more. Thank you very much.

Sincerely, Nat from Tucson natchotno smamhotmail.com

A great ride to prep for MS 150. Maybe you could make mention on your ride calender. Some of your folks might want to come down and ride with some flat-landers.

Oct 7, 2000 Saturday - McDowell Century IV

ABC. A very challenging Century ride from the center of Fountain Hills, up the hill then down past the fountain before heading out past the casino and up Shea Blvd. Will include a visit to Cave Creek before tackling the Highlands of Carefree. Then head through Reata Pass, down 9 mile hill past Rio Verde and back to Fountain Hills. Seriously hilly. Spectacular breath taking views from the start. There will also be a 100K ride that will be a less challenging ride but will include some spectacular vistas of the Verde River basin with the Four Peaks skyline as a backdrop. A little hilly. Both rides include rest stops, sag support and lunch afterward. Brian Nelson 602-989-8740

Prescott
Bicycle
Advisory
Committee

Hello everyone,

Things have been moving fast in the world of bicycle advocacy. Just a quick update:

We will be going to city council (again) to get approval to use city staff for the writing of the updated Bike Plan.  If we get approval we will have the resources necessary to put out a professional document that will go through the cities approval process and possibly get some projects in the capital budget for next year.   There is a lot of work to be done between now and then so anyone who wants to get involved or has concerns about how we plan to make this community a safer place to ride a bike, please attend our monthly meetings.  We meet the first Wednesday of every month at 5:30 pm in the basement of City Hall.

With the help of our friends in Phoenix, we are planning a Bicycle Advocacy Summit for August 26 and 27th.  We will have speakers from Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), Coalition of Arizona Bicyclists, Maricopa County Department of Transportation, Arizona State Legislative System, and Prescott Bicycle Advisory Committee.  We also hope to have a bike ride on one of these days.   Stay tuned for more details.

If you have any questions on upcoming events or what the committee is working on please call me at 541-7604 in the evenings.

Thanks Cindie Travis
