A Word From the New President
April, 99

Dear Chain Gang Members and Prescott area bicycle enthusiasts:

Some of you I see all of the time and others I have never met. My name is Tim Travis and I am your new club President. I started biking in the mid 1970’s and have been a member of several very strong clubs and teams. I would like to see the Chain Gang become a stronger club. The main objective on my agenda is to bring back old members and add new ones. We don't need new members for money. Financially we are doing fine. We need to grow our ranks so we can have more fun. More members means that there are more people in each ability group on the rides. More members also means more ride leaders, ride coordinators, and more variety.

I am the ride coordinator for the next three months and the permanent Web Master for our site. (http://surf-ici.com/chaingang/) Check us out! I have been very busy these last few weeks setting up rides and other activities. When you look at the ride schedule I hope that you notice some differences. I am new at this ride schedule thing and therefore I wasn't as skilled at recruiting ride leaders as I will be next time. If you want to lead a ride please call me at 520-541-7604 or preferably email me at WebMasterno smamPrescottYellowPages.com. I have up to May 8th already planned but the calendar is open after that. When you want to lead a ride please write a brief summary of the ride and include things like:

The distance
Options for different levels of riders
What time the ride starts
Is there a restaurant afterwards or before
If possible how long the ride is expected to last.
Description of scenery.

I have some strong philosophies concerning what makes a good ride. The ride should include opportunities for all levels of riders. Two different distances if possible or single track side trips. If you don't want to do the longer distance or single track I (or another volunteer) will lead that portion for you. I believe that if we have a larger variety of rides in the schedule we will attract more riders. I have planned some very exciting things for the next several rides. Here are some highlights:

On Saturday April 24th we are having a MT Bike ride that meets at my house (see ride schedule for directions) and afterwards we are having a meeting with an Arizona Bicycle Coalition Representative Doug Bonfelder. He will be talking about proposed legislation concerning riding on public streets. I have invited every group in the Prescott area that is related to bicycles. I also know that the famous Mr. Bill from Landis Cyclery will attend along with other leaders of bike organizations around the state. I expect a large crowd so don't miss out. If you don't plan on going on the ride, the meeting starts at 12:30 PM. Refreshments!

On May 1st – 8th is the Prescott Bike Week put on by the Prescott Alternative Transportation (PAT). I have been in contact with the director of PAT and suggested that we combine our activities. For more information please see their PAT Web Site. (http://www.epfguzzi.com/pat/)

On Tuesday May 4th we will be starting the Prescott Off Road Summer Training Series. This is an after work ride that meets at the Groom Creek 307 Trail Head every Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30 PM. See the Ride Schedule for more details.

On Saturday May 8th we will be riding the classic Prescott road rides. One group will ride to Wilhoit and back and the other group will be doing the Skull Valley Loop. See ride schedule for complete details. What makes this ride special is that I have invited all of the GABA and ABC members from all over the state. I expect a large group!

In closing I am looking forward to a great season and getting to know all of you. Don't be a stranger.

Tim Travis – President – Prescott Chain Gang Cycling Club.
